medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Eulogius of Córdoba (also Eulogius of Toledo; d. 859). A priest in Muslim-ruled Córdoba, Eulogius along with other Christians publicly proclaimed the superiority of Christianity and thus brought upon themselves capital punishment for denigrating the Prophet. Eulogius was also the chief chronicler of this movement, writing several accounts of the martyrs. His own life was sketched in a Vita by his friend, the layman Paul Albar (BHL 2704). Some of the martyrs' remains were translated to Paris in the early 860s. Kenneth Wolf's study of these deaths, _Christian Martyrs in Muslim Spain_ (Cambridge University Press, 1988), is available on-line here:

There are of course other saints named Eulogius. It's quite likely that the Cordoban saint of this name was named for the martyr of Tarragona familiar from Prudentius, _Peristephanon_, 6.

> In 858, a virgin named Leocritia of a noble family of the Moors was converted and sought his protection against her irate parents. St. Eulogius hid her among friends for a time, but eventually they were all discovered and condemned to death. St. Eulogius was beheaded on March 11, 859, and St. Leocritia four days later on March 15, 859.” (Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eulogius_of_C%C3%B3rdoba)
