The Medieval Latin Studies Group invites proposals for papers on imitation in Late Antique and Medieval Latin literature for a panel to be held at the annual meeting of the Society for Classical Studies in San Francisco in early January 2016.
The organizers of this panel welcome any paper that touches on imitation in Latin prose and poetry written during the postclassical and medieval periods (broadly construed). Close studies of illuminating instances or constellations of imitation, allusion, quotation, and adaptation by individual authors or in specific texts are welcome. Contributors are especially encouraged to explore in systematic ways—perhaps in conjunction with classical or modern theoretical models—how medieval authors worked with and against more diffuse sets of texts, rules, and expectations inherited from antiquity to develop distinctive modes of imitative practices that transcend mere reflexive or ornamental classicism.
Abstracts for papers requiring no more than 20 minutes to deliver must be received by March 15, 2015, preferably via email attachment to [log in to unmask]. Membership in the Medieval Latin Studies Group is not required to submit an abstract but all persons who submit abstracts must be SCS members in good standing.
