ESRC funded PhD in Journalism Studies (PhD Studentship) Reference Number: R2486 Closing Date: 15 May 2015 The Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies (JOMEC), supported by the ESRC Wales Doctoral Training Centre (Wales DTC) invites applications to ONE fully-funded PhD studentship for the 2015/16 academic year on the ESRC DTC’s newest pathway, ‘Journalism and Democracy.’ The awards are available on either a 1+3 or +3 basis. A 1+3 studentship provides funding for four years, completing the MSc in Social Science Research Methods offered by the Cardiff School of Social Sciences (SOCSI) adapted to the needs of Journalism Studies students in the 1st year, followed by 3 years research funding for a PhD. A +3 studentship provides funding for the three years research study in Journalism Studies only. Studentships will commence in October 2015 and will cover your tuition fees as well as a maintenance grant (set at £14,057 p.a. for 2015/16, updated each year); the award includes an additional Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) of £500 per year for three years for full-time students. These studentships are ‘open’ awards therefore the School welcomes proposals in a wide range of areas, however applicants should consider approaching a potential supervisor before submitting their application to confirm that there is supervisory capacity within the School and to discuss their draft application. Eligibility Residency: Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements. To be eligible for the full award, EU Nationals must have been in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the course for which they are seeking funding, including for the purposes of full-time education. EU Nationals who do not meet the above residency requirement are eligible for a fees only award, provided that they have been ordinarily resident in the EU for at least 3 years prior to the start of their proposed programme of study. Academic criteria: Applicants for a studentship must have achieved a minimum of a 2.1 undergraduate degree. Additionally, applicants must have obtained or be about to obtain a Master's degree in a related area, with the grade Merit or Distinction or the equivalent. Preference will be given to candidates with degrees in journalism, media, cultural studies, politics, or social sciences, but we will also consider other disciplines, such as languages and communication, international relations, sociology and other, related social science subjects.
