CLIMsystems Critical to Adaptation Atlas Release

The partnership of re:focus and Blue Raster was bolstered by the inclusion of CLIMsystems in the development of the new edition of the Adaptation Atlas. The beta version is scheduled for release at the Clinton Global Initiative event in Denver, Colorado in June. The new atlas has updated CMIP5 data layers for sea level rise, temperature and extreme precipitation. There is also a new compare cities tool that allows users to compare their cities climate against the 1600 other cities in the current database. Plans are afoot to expand many aspects of the Atlas and CLIMsystem is proud to be involved with the dedicated teams at re:focus and Blue Raster in bringing this important project to fruition. Check out the website to see how you can be involved:

City Climate Risk Product Launched

For any urban area the first step toward formulating an adaptation plan is understanding their current and future climate risk. With our considerable experience in climate risk assessment we have devised a rapid assessment product for cities that covers the key aspects of temperature, precipitation, wind and sea level rise if required as well as extreme events applying the latest CMIP5 climate data and well tested CLIMsystems methodologies. The report that is generated includes high quality and transparent analysis of key climate risk aspects presented in a manner that is easily understood by a range of stakeholders involved in urban adaptation planning.  Visit our website and see a draft report and order a study for your urban area and take the first step toward climate resilient development:

ExtendWeather Makes Sub-Seasonal and Seasonal Forecasts Available

It has taken a few years of serious and sustained work but we have done it! The team at CLIMsystems and most notably Dr. Chonghua Yin, Dr. Meng Wang and Dr. Yinpeng Li have developed a breakthrough working with CFSv2 data from NOAA for generating high quality sub-seasonal and seasonal forecasts for New Zealand. With downscaling to 5 kilometres and colourful maps sub-seasonal and seasonal forecast data has never been more accessible. A proprietary downscaling technique applied by our experts means that New Zealand has a new forecasting capability that is being recognised by the energy, agricultural, forestry and public sectors. The service features up to nine months of forecasting for a range of critical variables such as precipitation, temperature, wind and potential evapotranspiration deficit. This new capacity is being taken to the world and we look forward to applying this new data in other developments such as a tourism index and asset risk products. See the new outputs and signed up for the service at www.extendweather.com

CLIMsystems Assists with Cyclone Pam Recovery

HMNZS Canterbury of the New Zealand Navy has been tasked with relief services for the northern part of the SHEFA group of islands in Vanuatu with a base on Epi island. CLIMsystems staff Dr. Peter Kouwenhoven, Dr. Peter Urich and Engineer David Bishop did a climate risk and adaptation assessment of Epi and offshore Lamen Island a couple of years ago. The focus was on the airstrip, roads and water supplies. A great deal of relevant survey information, reports and photographs were taken and these have all been sent through to the Navy and up to the crew of the HMNZS Canterbury to assist in the rehabilitation efforts. With our long history of assisting with climate and adaptation planning in Vanuatu Cyclone Pam and the people of Vanuatu have been in our thoughts. Please support the relief efforts in the islands - the people of Vanuatu are some of the best you will find on this fragile planet. We wish them all the best in the difficult days ahead.

More Interns Join CLIMsystems

The New Year has brought CLIMsystems a range of talented master's student interns and volunteers from the University of Waikato's Management School. Shirley (Yan) Sun, Joy (Bing) Ma and Catherine (Qianru) Yuan have formed a cohesive team with experience in online marketing, business development and financial analysis.  They have come on board to support the launch of both http://www.extendweather.com/ and the http://www.climsystems.com/adaptationatlas-support-services/.  CLIMsystems and the University of Waikato have a long standing relationship when it comes to providing top students with the opportunity to gain valuable organisational experience in their discipline area, at the same time providing the organisation with a student to work on a specialized project. This relationship offers the interns a safe place to learn which is a core belief of their mentor, Clare Wimmer . . . and that is exactly what the interns are experiencing. "Simply thinking about who am I going to work with makes me excited. She took the pressure off working for an unfamiliar company right from the interview. I ask her and staff anything, anytime and they are always helpful, LOL" said Joy.
