The pre-conference workshops are open both to members and non-members of HTAi. It is possible to register for one or both of these one-day workshops separately, irrespective of whether you are attending the HTAi annual conference. Non-members of HTAi do not need to join HTAi to register for these workshops.

Please note that non-HTAi members are not required to pay the HTAi membership fee in order to register for one or both of the workshops. This is required only if you wish to attend the main conference on June 15-17.

 

 

Information about the workshops:

INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATION RETRIEVAL FOR HEALTH TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT

Date: Saturday June 13th 2015

Event overview: During this one-day introductory and awareness-raising workshop, participants will learn about searching for HTA and other evidence syntheses, discuss issues relevant to their own search practices and hear how other HTA organizations organize their services.

Target audience: Information specialists, librarians and others who wish to gain or improve their knowledge in information retrieval issues for HTA.

Workshop session description and objectives:

The workshop will address key issues in literature searching for HTA and topics such as services, resources and competencies that are needed for information retrieval for HTA. The workshop will be divided into two sessions:

1.       Information retrieval aspects of HTA: scoping and developing the research question, sources to search, how to design search strategies, use of search filters, peer reviewing search strategies, reference management, documenting and reporting the search process and updating searches.

Mode of delivery: presentations and group discussions.

2.       A comparison of information retrieval practices across three HTA organizations (Canada, Norway and the UK)

Mode of delivery: structured interviews, followed by discussion.

ADVANCED INFORMATION RETRIEVAL FOR HTA: QUALITATIVE RESEARCH, MEDICAL DEVICES & TEXT ANALYSIS TOOLS

Event overview: The Information Resources Group (IRG) advanced skills workshop provides an opportunity for information specialists and others interested in information retrieval to network and discuss important issues in HTA information management and systematic review work. 

Target audience: Information specialists, librarians and others who wish to gain or improve their knowledge in advanced aspects of information retrieval issues for HTA.

Workshop session description and objectivesThis year's workshop examines three important aspects within information retrieval: qualitative research, medical devices and text analysis tools.

 

1.       Qualitative research -- Andrew Booth provides an overview of the main characteristics of good quality qualitative research. Discussion will focus on searching MEDLINE, CINAHL and alternative information sources. The use of search filters and supplementary search techniques will also be covered.

 

2.       Medical devices -- Healthcare Improvement Scotland Evidence Directorate describes the approaches and processes it uses to rapidly share knowledge on medical devices with healthcare decision makers at NHSScotland. Discussion will focus on how to identify medical device information, especially sources used, filters and adverse events literature.

 

3.       Text analysis tools -- Text analysis tools such as PubMed PubReMiner and SimStat are important and useful tools for search strategy development. This workshop will introduce tools for text analysis and provide examples to illustrate how the tools can assist search strategy development.
