Hello David,

We use a system with the somewhat unfortunate name of DeafWatch – it sounds very similar to the system you describe, with Deaf students having a ‘daytime’ pager for general use which vibrates and tells them which building a fire alarm has gone off in (and where to gather) and another one if they live on campus in halls which only goes off if the alarm sounds in the hall that they live in.

The idea behind the ‘night-time’ pager is that it can be strapped to wrists / ankles should the alarm go off when the student is asleep.

All is this underpinned by PEEPs.

Kind regards,

Simon

Subject: Alerting Students

Hi Colleagues,

A connected question for you concerning emergency alerts for Deaf Students and access alerts for physically disabled students....

At Portsmouth we have historically used two systems for messaging students about selected alerts. Deaf students receive an automatically generated text message to alert them to fire alarms, whilst a manual system is used to inform physically impaired students of issues such as lift breakdowns. Our automated system for emergency alerts filters the messages to only those students who use the building in which the alarm has activated, whilst the access alerts are not filtered, but we'd like it to be.

How do other universities handle such things, and does anyone know of a handy system that could handle both?

David
