The Future of Pre-charge Police Bail Seminar - 17 June 2015 – Central London

Pre-charge bail has significant implications for suspects’, victims’ and the public’s view of the legitimacy of the police. It has become a high profile issue following cases involving celebrities who have spent significant periods of time on bail awaiting the outcome of police investigations. The Home Office has recently consulted on changes to the law including the introduction of time limits. Yet, these proposals tinker with a police power which arguably  needs more fundamental reform. This seminar will bring together experts to explore the potential futures for pre-charge bail. It will explore the findings of the only independent empirical research study on the use of pre-charge bail and examine the current operation of pre-charge police bail and recent plans to amend the law and policy and assess possible futures for pre-charge bail and its alternatives in terms of law, policy and practice.

The seminar will be of interest to policy makers, criminal justice practitioners including the police and prosecutors, NGOs, academics and students.
