Kirstie - in a crypt the coffins would be laid on shelves and people would periodically go down either to visit or to add new coffins. Lead linings were used to stop the crypt from becoming somewhat gruesome from the decomposition process.

I have no idea why the bones of Richard 3rd have been buried in a lead lined coffin, that just seems silly
