WADHAM COLLEGE, OXFORD

STIPENDIARY LECTURERSHIP IN CLASSICS

1st September 2015 – 31st August 2016

 

The College proposes to appoint a 12-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in Classics for the 2015-2016 academic year (when Stephen Heyworth, Fellow and Tutor in Classics, will be on sabbatical leave).

 

Duties and Responsibilities: The lecturer will be required to give an average of twelve hours per week of tutorials during the eight weeks of each full term, and to engage in advanced research. The successful candidate will be able to provide teaching in Greek and Latin language, for at least two of the Classical Mods papers Homer, Virgil, Texts and Contexts, and for a range of papers in Greek and/or Latin literature from the Final Honour School syllabus, including preferably at least two of the following: Greek Literature of the 5th century B.C., Latin Literature of the 1st century B.C., Early Greek Hexameter Poetry, Greek Tragedy, Ovid. With the Fellow/Lecturer in Ancient History, the Classics lecturer will be expected to share responsibility for those students reading Classics and for arranging teaching in all language and literature options, as well as setting and marking collections (college termly examinations), writing and authorizing reports, overseeing their studies, and providing pastoral care and advice. The lecturer will be a member of the College’s Tutorial Board and be expected to attend its meetings. They would also be expected to play a major role in the undergraduate admissions process.

 

Qualifications Required: The successful candidate will have a doctorate in Classics, or will have submitted their thesis by 1st September 2015.

 

Salary: The stipend will be on a scale from £25,513 to £26,274 per annum (the Senior Tutors’ Committee recommended scale), subject to revision in line with national adjustments to University teachers' salaries, and the position is superannuable under USS.
