Phillis Wheatley (c1753 – 1784) was the first African woman to publish her poems in Britain. She had been enslaved by the Wheatley family of Boston, Massachusetts. Her poetry brought her great fame both in Britain and her North American colonies and her work was praised by figures such as George Washington and et al.
