I love the word 'should', it means you can do what you want if you can justify it!

Hi Pandina

You may want to refer them to Pathology Quality Assurance Review - I'm sure your Trust governance department is aware of it, or would dearly like to be aware of it.........................POCT specifically mentioned in 4.87

"Commissioners should follow the MHRA guidelines when commissioning POCT."

Our experience is somewhat different. We have lack of real commitment from our ED department. They loved the idea and would like tests done asap, with minimal regulations. Lack of ownership is our biggest huddle and challenge to date. I think any POCT without realised commitment from the user side will at some point fail, unless the laboratory is prepared to 'do everything' for the users.

Hi Aimee,
We have such a lab set up on one of our sites with no Pathology. We off a renal profile and Trop I, FBC with 5 part differential, D-Dimer, INR , as well as the usual Blood Gas and glucose testing. It is all run by the nursing staff supported by POCT and works really well. It is based in a POCT Lab on CAU which is also temperature monitored via Comark. The main object is to see who they can send home.

Regards

Jackie.

Dear all,

We've recently been approached by our ED department who are wanting general chemistry, haematology and coagulation point of care testing, with a view to reduce turn around times.

It has raised a number of concerns in the lab and I just wondered if anyone has a similar set up or request from their ED department and would be happy to share their experience/thoughts.

Many thanks,

Aimée
