Research Associate positions, Linguistic DNA of Modern Western Thought Project

We are looking for two post-doctoral researchers to join a UK-wide research consortium, led by the University of Sheffield. The research project aims to understand the evolution of early modern thought by modelling the semantic and conceptual changes which occurred in English discourse from 1500 to 1800. The Research Associates will therefore be tasked – as part of a team from Sheffield, Glasgow, and Sussex – to explore the emergence of early modern cultural keywords and concepts through examining their semantic make-up in historical printed discourse; investigate how the period shapes our understanding of the emergence of modern culture; and prepare results from these for academic and general dissemination. The project will establish the historical genealogies of modern forms of knowledge and perception, making the hidden patterns and trends of the past at once visible and traceable in the present. The result will be the linguistic DNA of modern thought.
