*Tropical Tourism Outlook Conference*

*Balancing Development and Sustainability in Tourism Destinations*

*Tropical Environments* comprise some of the richest and most complex
ecosystems on the planet. The diversity and density of resources that
exist in tropical environments means they are increasingly impacted by
global economic and social forces, including economic development pressures
that are often tourism and recreation related. They are also being impacts
rapid population growth that is driven by economic migrants, major resource
extraction in the form of oil and gas drilling and relentless industrial
fishing, and global climate change and steadily rising sea levels. These
pressures create enormous challenges for tropical communities due to the
global scope of the problems, an inadequate understanding of the issues,
and a paucity of effective management tools.

*Sustainable Development* has been at the core of place and environmental
management since it was introduced through the UN's Brudtland Report in
1987. Creating sustainable tropical environments, however, seems to be
continually beyond the reach of our achievements. Part of this challenge is
because the concept of sustainable development includes both the goals of
economic development and those of environmental and cultural conservation.
As such, sustainable development in general, and sustainable tourism in
particular, is inherently contested and has outcomes that typically result
in winners and losers.

*The Objectives* of this conference are to provide a platform for tourism
students and educators, government agency employees, hospitality and
tourism industry practitioners, public and private land managers, community
development workers, and others interested in these issues to share,
exchange and debate ideas and knowledge related to our understanding and
management of tourism development and conservation in tropical
environments. Through this, the conference aims to identify practical
solutions, chart new directions, and create opportunities for sustainable
tourism development in these special environments.

*The island of Lombok <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lombok> is a special
place. *It offers a traditional agricultural and multicultural society that
is set in a diverse environment of gorgeous beaches and stunning rainforest
covered mountains. Muslim, Hindu and Christian communities live in harmony
on the lower slopes of Mount Rinjani, the second highest volcano in
Indonesia. Busy beach resorts, such as Sengigi and the islet of Gili
Trawangan stand in contrast to secluded beach and mountain hideaways,
including Kuta in the south and Senaru in the north. Lombok is accessible
from Singapore, Jakarta, and neighboring Bali.
