"“The graying of America” has been a popular phrase in recent years as

the number of older people continues to grow. Statistics project that by

2030, Americans 65 and older will actually outnumber their younger

counterparts.

 

With the aging of the "baby boomer" generation and the lengthening of

life spans, both the number and proportion of older people are rapidly

increasing. Many of the health related problems that contributed to

decreased life span have been combated. Yet, this same achievement

presents new challenges in meeting the social, environmental,

psychological, economic and health care needs of older adults.

 

    These shifting demographics have created a greater demand for

professionals with specialized knowledge and expertise in aging.

Social work is unique among the health and mental health professions in

that it considers the physical, mental, and social aspects of individuals—

an approach that is critical to providing services to older adults and their

families."

"Gerontological social workers are experts at meeting the biopsychosocial

needs of older adults. Part of the job is connecting the elderly with

community resources. Social workers coordinate care for individuals who

need a number of services and who will, over a period of months, years,

and sometimes decades, require care at different levels. They help elderly

individuals and their families examine their needs, and determine how they

will be paid for. They assist them in applying for needed services and dealing

with problems as they arise. They may help seniors fill out various other kinds

of paperwork, including advance directives.

 

Gerontological social workers may need to assess clients’ functional capacity.

They have some expertise in recognizing the difference between normal and

abnormal aging processes and will refer clients to medical professionals when

necessary."

Geriatric Social Work Initiative (GSWI)

    

"In 1999, the John A. Hartford Foundation established the Geriatric

Social Work Initiative (GSWI) to address the significant gaps in social

work education around the health and well-being of older adults.

The Initiative’s programs have had outstanding outcomes and made a

tremendous impact on the field. You can read about the original GSWI

programs—our legacy programs—here.

 

To build on this success and to align with the Foundation’s new

strategic vision, the GSWI was restructured in 2013 and became the

National Center on Gerontological Social Work Excellence.

 

The National Center consists of three main activities:

 

Establishing five Centers of Excellence in Geriatric Social Work that will

sustain the GSWI’s accomplishments and work with community agencies

to develop effective ways to incorporate new knowledge and models into

practice and policy. These schools include:

 

    Boston College

    Hunter College

    University of Michigan

    University of Southern California

    University of Washington

 

Collaboration with the Veterans Administration (VA) to develop social

work research leaders and advance evidence-based knowledge related to

VA practice in aging; and

 

Mobilizing a vibrant alumni network of scholars, fellows, mentors and

others to use their expertise to impact practice and policy."
