Also – I’m interested to hear what others think. The whole issue of what kinds of statistical analyses should or can legitimately be used for what kinds of analyses in realist work has me intrigued – I’ve been meaning to post a question about it for some time. For example: if one has already hypothesised mechanisms, is it (or ‘in what circumstances is it’) reasonable to collect quantitative data about indicators for those mechanisms, (even though one knows that mechanisms are complex processes not static ‘variables’); and then to attempt to identify relationships between mechanisms and outcome patterns? If so, can one go further than correlations analysis? What about identifying relationships between mechanisms and contexts? I’d be delighted to hear what others think about all that – but I think Andrew’s article warrants response first. CheersGill
