Some super advice from Helen, thank you very much!

Hi Jane

Just noticed that international travel is involved, would be happy to give any advice, but things you might want to consider are

·         Live vaccines. – Some consultants don’t want them to have live vaccines which are as you know mandatory for some areas.   Most are happy if the CD4 count is over a certain level but you need to check with the individual consultant.   It is also important to know that there is evidence of reduced efficacy of live vaccines in some HIV+ clients so again an individual risk assessment .

·         Anti-malarials – some of the antiretrovirals are contraindicated with Malarone and doxycycline so you would need to know what meds they are on if you are doing a malaria risk assessment.

·         Local laws regarding prescription drugs. – This can be a sticky one – you need to remember that some countries where for example homosexuality is illegal may make the mental leap from having certain meds and the person being gay – we have a lot of gay staff who travel frequently and to date we haven’t had any problems but there is always a first time.

·         Local laws re visas – some countries demand HIV testing when applying for visas to stay over a certain length of time and will refuse HIV + individuals or those who refuse a test.

·         Good overall travel health promotion is vital – especially around food and water hygiene.

·         Lastly check what the local healthcare provision is like in case the individual falls ill.  USA and other first world countries are usually OK, although there might be insurance issues, check with your company insurance team (in confidence of course).

I have found THT really helpful on a lot of occasions.  But if there is anything more I can help you with please let me know.    Again I am happy for you to post this to the JISC site for other members to use.

Kind Regards

Helen
