We are seeking to make an academic appointment in the broad area of theoretical and computational chemistry in the Centre for Computational 
Chemistry (http://www.chm.bris.ac.uk/ccc/) in the School of Chemistry (http://www.bris.ac.uk/chemistry/) (SoC) at the University of Bristol 
(UoB). 
The Centre for Computational Chemistry (CCC) is internationally recognized as one of the leading centres in this field and represents a 
key strength of the School. The scientist appointed will be or have ambition to be a leader in their research field. The research areas 
for this post are not strictly defined: we are seeking to appoint an outstanding scientist in the Centre for Computational Chemistry to 
strengthen and build research capacity and to complement existing activity across the School of Chemistry and the University of Bristol. Our 
overriding objective, however, is to appoint an individual with clear vision and ambition to drive growth and development in the broad area of 
computational and theoretical chemistry. These areas are of strategic importance to the School of Chemistry and to the University more widely: 
for example, UoBs BlueCrystal is a world-class High Performance Computing facility, the result of sustained and significant investment 
by the University.

The successful candidate will join one of the largest and most highly rated Chemistry Departments in the UK for both research and teaching. 
Research from the CCC lies at the forefront of development and applications of theoretical chemistry, and is notably collaborative within the CCC 
itself, across the wider SoC, and beyond, both within and outside UoB. The interdisciplinary nature of research in the CCC is illustrated by 
the joint appointments of CCC staff with other Schools (e.g. Physics and Computer Science). Two UK Collaborative Computational Projects (CCP5 and 
CCP-BioSim) and a UK High End Computing Consortium (HECBioSim) are led by CCC members. The School recruits high quality undergraduates (about 
180 each year, most with A*AA or better), postgraduates (around 50 annually) and plays a key role in several EPSRC and BBSRC Centres for 
Doctoral Training: Particularly relevant here is the EPSRC Theory and Modelling in Chemical Sciences CDT (TMCS) (http://www.tmcs.ac.uk/) and 
also CDTs in Catalysis, Chemical Synthesis, Functional Nanomaterials, Quantum Engineering and Synthetic Biology. Other recent highlights include 
the establishment in 2014 of BrisSynBio, a 13m BBSRC/EPSRC-funded research centre in synthetic biology, for which modelling and computation are a 
central theme.

Our dynamic research community covers all aspects of chemistry and collaborates widely with other disciplines locally, nationally and 
internationally. The School also has exceptional facilities for computational chemistry as well as for biophysics, mass spectrometry, a 
molecular biology suite, NMR spectroscopy, peptide synthesis and X-ray diffraction together with further access to facilities across the 
University of Bristol, for example in all types of advanced light, electron and scanning probe microscopies and for high-performance 
computing. Bristol is home to BlueCrystal, a bespoke high-performance computing facility with 5,408 cores and a peak performance of over 112 
Tflops. BrisSynBio and TMCS both benefit from dedicated HPC resources. In addition, the University invested 2m in the establishment of the 
Research Data Storage Facility (RDSF), to provide a secure, resilient facility for the long-term (up to 20-year) storage of research data. As 
a result Bristol boasts a vibrant and rapidly growing multidisciplinary computational science community.
