I've used GeneologyJ, but it was long enough ago that I don't remember much about it. The good thing about open-source software is that you can try it out without a major commitment, and I believe that most open-source genealogy software uses the standard GEDCOM file format. You can find sample GEDCOM files to test out the software's ability to generate family trees in places such as http://sourceforge.net/projects/godskingsheroes/files/ged%20files/royalty/

Not a religious issue, but I'm hoping some of you will have made use of genealogical software and can give me an idea of what is useful.. I don't need to handle a massive amount of genealogical data,  just very simple and fragmentary material but covering 5 or 6 generations.  It would be nice to find some free software that allows me to keep track of my records, but that will also generate a family tree diagram that is suitable for eventual publication.  A quick Google search revealed 'Gramps' and 'GenealogyJ' which both look promising but I thought I'd ask if anyone has personal experience- especially of which programmes would generate a publishable family tree.
