The ARLIS Professional Development Committee has organised a visit to Goldsmiths College Special Collections, The Textile Collection and Women's Art Library, in London.

The visit will take place on Friday 27th March, 2pm - 4pm

Goldsmiths Textile Collection, founded in the 1980s by Constance Howard and Audrey Walker, comprises textile art, embroidery and dress from all continents. This global collection is complemented with a variety of teaching materials and archives, including technical and experimental samples and Constance Howard's own teaching archive. The Collection is housed in the Constance Howard Gallery, an AHRC-funded centre dedicated to multidisciplinary textiles research. The Gallery holds a specialist reference library that includes historical and anthropological resources on textiles and dress, books on textile materials and techniques, with a substantial selection of rare materials on textile and fibre art, exhibition catalogues, and books and pamphlets on individual artists.

The Women's Art Library, which began as an artists' initiative in the early 80s to provide women artists with a place to deposit documentation of their work, holds slides, artist statements, exhibition ephemera, catalogues, and press material as well as audio and videotapes, photographs and CD-Roms. Thousands of artists from around the world are represented in some form within the collection, which continues to grow to accommodate new artists donations and to reflect contemporary art practice. http://www.gold.ac.uk/make
