Civil War and Narrative
explores the role of testimonies and narratives in civil wars. A range of contexts will be considered in a comparative historical perspective, from the English Civil Wars to the current conflict in Syria. The conference brings together researchers in a
number of disciplines as well as journalists, peace practitioners and non-governmental organisations involved in recording, archiving and analysing survivors’ testimonies, and provides an opportunity for discussion with peace practitioners Jo Dover, Claire
Hackett and Katy Radford, and delegates working with NGOs such as the Foundation for Peace,
Healing Through Remembering and Vivo – Victim’s Voice.
Keynote speakers: David Armitage (History, Harvard), Marie Breen-Smyth (International Politics, Surrey), Lynne Cameron (Applied Linguistics, Open University), Brandon Hamber (Peace and Conflict Studies, Ulster) and Fergal Keane (BBC News, tbc).
