I've hesitated to comment so far as I'm semiretired and no longer directly involved in museums education. I also have insufficient knowledge of the pros and cons of the Alexander Palace proposals to take sides on the issue under discussion.

However I would be very sad to see this list stifling debate on any topic related to education and museums. One of the things I love about the GEM list (and why I continue to be a member) is its mix of practical queries and replies alongside more philosophical discussions of museological /educational issues. (Fewer of the latter these days, perhaps because people's time is more constrained - but I hope most members still feel they are important?)

I didn't feel either of the original posts was either irrelevant in topic or inflammatory in language, merely an expression of strongly held beliefs. Personally I would be quite interested to know more about the arguments on either side, but if not I just press delete. But whatever the merits of any particular topic, I do feel it is dangerous for us to marginalise or discourage dissent provided of course it doesn't cross the line into personal attacks - I don't think this did.

Best wishes
Pauline

Amaria,

Your view below appreciated and noted.

Should the fate of the built presence of the BBC @ Ally Pally be considered irrelavent to all in Gemland - then I will naturally desist from posting updates (note to site moderator - your view?). In my humble view the M in GEM ergo Museums kind of points to the relavence of museums not only being a repository for stuff from which we learn but the artifact itself - think what the Bletchly Park shorn of all its WW2  additions - sure learning could still happen as in any classroom BUT at what cost.

Meanwhile thanks to all the close on 200 who with think otherwise.

Kind regards Mark

Hello fellow Gemmers, I may come to this late but non the less I felt it important to make this point.

I would like to follow on from a fellow learning professionals email I do not feel that Mark Magidson and his crusade against Alexandra Palace is an appropriate topic for this forum given the tone and call for action of the post I fail to see its relevance or appropriateness and using it as a blatant tool to garner support is appalling.  All his post appears to be is a victimisation exercise and is unwelcome on a daily basis.

At some point every organisation will undertake a project or hold an controversial exhibition of which members of the public and local residents will object as is there right, but they should not be encouraged to do on a forum for education/learning professionals designed to shame an organisation.

I would like to ask that Mark Magidson and others who wish to rant be asked to stop using this forum which is designed for museum/heritage learning professionals to support and share best practises, ideas sharing and sector news to promote his agenda.

The posts over the last few days have soured the usually positive atmosphere on the forum and its not appropriate or relevant. GEM is a fantastic resource and it should be treated as such. I look forward to hearing what my colleagues in the sector have been doing and every post helps to shape my learning and thinking.
