Hi
We have just invested in a system so that all our resits are purchased online. Students are able to log into their personal account and see their previous module results with UMS and select any module to purchase.
We do not display modules for which no re-sit is available – such as course work. We can then download the file and filter by module for inputting into MIS. This prevents student selecting the wrong modules and/or illegible details.
Our finance office is thrilled as they have only had to process a couple of payments - just a few students who are unable to pay online – money goes straight into the college account. We do generate an income
of over £12,000 – so although there is a cost – it is worth it for us.
Kind regards

Hi Ros,
I’ve just had a monthly budget meeting with our Finance Manager and was told that I have unexpected income of £1600 which is all down to our re-sit fees.
It doesn’t create a massive amount of extra work for us as tutors know that if a student wishes to re-sit, they have to come and collect a green form from us and take to our Information Centre to pay. (I was
recently offered a card machine by our Finance team so we could take payments ourselves, but my team were totally against the idea, so we’ve left the system as it was). The main hassle for us is when tutors try to put pressure on us to organise online re-sits
at very short notice, which means there isn’t necessarily time for the students to pay before the exam. However, I have recently reminded all staff that we require a minimum of 3 weeks’ notice to book an exam.
The re-sit rule isn’t generally waived during the year, it’s only towards the end of the year when curriculum heads come under pressure to maximise their success rates, that we get requests from them to waive
fees, so I usually refer to our VP for permission. We also have instances where students claim they can’t afford the fees, so in those cases we generally refer them to Student Services as they can sometimes cover the fees from a hardship fund or something
similar.
Overall, I think it’s worth the effort because I don’t see why vocational students shouldn’t pay the fees when AL students always have.

Hi Graham
I shared your document with my line manager and pound signs lit up his eyes! We only charge A-level students for re-sits at the moment. May I ask how much extra work it involves for your Exams team administering
re-sit charges and how often the payment for re-sit rule is waived?
Kind regards
