Please accept my apologies if you receive this message several times - I am writing on behalf of Prof. Mike Wald who has an interesting project that might help us all support students using audio and video recordings.  He says…

“Dear Colleagues

We are very interested in what problems or issues students have that the use of video or audio recordings either introduce or might help solve using new technologies and ideas.

We will respond individually to everyone who replies and also provide an anonymised 'wish list' assembled from all the responses.

Please don't let your ideas and wish list be restricted by what you think is possible as what you might think would be impossible might actually be possible soon

We were responsible for the JISC funded free web based multimedia annotation application Synote (synote.org) that won the Times Higher Education Outstanding ICT Initiative of the Year Award in 2011. The original version of Synote was developed in 2008 and is still freely available but changes to browsers and audio and video formats have caused some limitations and so our team have developed many new possibilities that we use at Southampton but have not yet made available to others.

We are very interested in your ideas so we can make the next version of Synote as useful as possible.

Some of the things we do that you might be interested in include:

Automatic speech recognition or manual transcription and captioning of recordings Editing errors in Automatic speech recognition captions either individually or collaboratively by students Time synchronising comments, notes, tags, links, images with the recordings Searching the transcript and notes for the recordings and replaying just the relevant sections Quizzes and Polls time synchronised with the recordings with analytics of the results Selecting parts of recordings and replaying them in any order Collaborating online through sharing notes and recordings Online discussions of each others' notes/comments Printing out or exporting any comments, notes, captions, images etc.

with timings”

Please reply to Prof Mike Wald at [log in to unmask]  NOT  the list.

Many thanks for your interest and help.

Best wishes

E.A.
