James Attachment relationships, autism and learning; how understanding the overlapping and interlocking needs of pupils can help us to provide a supportive and enabling environment and curriculum Speaker: Julie Revels, Kate Cairns Associates Date: 23 March 2015 Time: 16:30-18:00 Location: The Thomas Hardye School, Dorchester Booking link: http://goo.gl/SDsGRh With an ever growing knowledge base in neuroscience providing a scientific underpinning of the importance of attachment relationships it is increasingly important for all those within the education system to develop a greater understanding of the potential implications for meeting the needs of a wide range of pupils. This session will address the importance of understanding the complex nature of individual pupils' learning profiles who may share characteristics associated with unmet attachment needs and other conditions such as autism. It will include consideration of how professionals working with young people can help them to learn to self-regulate their emotional states for increased access to learning opportunities, through co regulation and co learning. Biography Julie Revels, Kate Cairns Associates Julie has been working in education and the field of special educational needs and disability for 29 years. She has been a tutor on the Masters in Inclusive and Special Education and the National Award for SENCOs at The Institute of Education in London, she is a lead SENCO for nasen and is currently programme adviser and lead consultant in a Department for Education (DfE) funded national project to implement the new SEND reforms. As an associate for Kate Cairns she specialises in developing the application and use of neuroscience and attachment theory in the educational context. Open to students, staff and community.
