On April 29th — May 5th, 2015,

Centre for Typological and Semiotic Folklore Studies RSUH

will host the 15th International School and Conference

on Folkloristics, Sociolinguistics, and Cultural Anthropology

“Anthropology of Power: Folklore Texts and Social Practices”

 

The following topics will be covered:

— Domination and subjection in communication.

— Dialogue with the regime: from letters to Stalin to rally banners.

— The concept of authority in political and national discourse.

— The power of words and images.

— Mythological heroes as rulers and subjects.

— Folklore in interrogation protocols.

How to participate. Those willing to take part in the School’s sessions should fill the form at http://goo.gl/forms/y036Qa8nq2 and provide and abstract of either or several of the following presentation types:

— a paper on one of the subjects of the conference;

— a lecture or a workshop (1–3 sessions);

— a screening of ethnographic video materials with commentary.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students may also participate as listeners by achieving high ranking in the enrollment competition, which consists of solving ethnographic problems. In order to apply for the enrollment competition one should fill the form at http://goo.gl/forms/svWrwUQbsB.

The deadline for abstract and problem submissions is February 9th, 2015. The problems will be sent to the competition participants after they fill the respective form. The list of the School’s participants will be circulated on February 20th, 2015.

We would like to underline that undergraduate and postgraduate students can participate in both types of participation contest simultaneously.

The School’s sessions will take place in Pereslavl-Zalessky (150 kilometers to the northeast of Moscow). Transfer from and back to Moscow, accommodation, and meals for the participants will be provided. The participants must pay a registration fee of 1300 RUR.

The working languages of the School are Russian and English.

Abstracts of the School’s papers will be published on the Center for Typological and Semiotic Folklore Studies’ website and in the book-form.
