Rachel - if it really is asbestos (which it may not be) you would need specialist removers, which are all over the place - but I remember one case when I was at St Fagans, a couple of these 'specialists' who came to quote said the material was asbestos, and another said it wasn't, so perfectly safe to remove ourselves.... - so beware unless you can identify it or you know for definite, make sure you use a reputable company.

Subject: Asbestos in cookers

Dear All

We have a collection of gas cookers, some of which contain asbestos. We are currently trying to find out what our options are in terms of removing or sealing in the asbestos. I'd be interested to find out what other people have done, as we can't be the only museum with this problem.

Any tips or recommendations gratefully received.

Many thanks
Rachel
