The files of the Stasi, communist East Germany’s notorious secret police, have been made generally available for the first time on a German government website.
The Stasi, widely regarded as one of the most effective intelligence
organisations of the Cold War, kept an iron grip on every aspect of life
inside East Germany, spying on its own citizens and keeping extensive files
on millions of them.
