The Archives and Records Association has had the sad news that Carl Newton died on Boxing Day at the age of 79 of leukaemia.

One of Carl's last pieces of work was an assessment of the ARA's archives and records and we are grateful to Teresa Blackmore for the initial notification.  I  knew Carl through the Society of Archivists' Records Management Group , but am grateful to one of Carl's long standing colleagues, for a brief career summary.

After graduating from Oxford University with a degree in Modern History in the mid-1950s, Carl completed the diploma in archive administration course at UCL. He began his archive career at Durham Record Office, going on to become County Archivist at East Sussex in 1971. Carl saw the opportunities offered in business and moved to British Steel as Northern Regional Archivist in 1974. Subsequently he worked for BP before joining James Martin Associates as a Managing Consultant in 1986/7. Carl set up his own consultancy, Strategic Information Management, which he ran until his retirement, though he continued to take on occasional projects thereafter.

Carl was latterly Visiting Professor of Archives at the University of Northumbria. He was a great enthusiast for the music of Elgar and was an active member of the Elgar Society.

Carl was an innovative thinker and practitioner and his contribution to archives and records management was extensive. He was a lifelong member of the Society of Archivists and the ARA, a founder member of the Records Management Group and of the Records Management Society - now the IRMS. He was Executive Vice President (Europe) of the International Records Management Council from 1984 to 1988.

Carl was a great colleague and also very good company. I know he will be sadly missed by many.

Carl's funeral will be held on 20 January 2015 at 1.45pm at Eastbourne Crematorium, Hide Hollow, Eastbourne BN23 8AE, and then afterwards at the Langham Hotel.

Instead of flowers, donations would be much appreciated to the Yorkshire Dales Society and sent c/o:
