Dear colleagues,

Just a reminder that the deadline for the role mentioned below closes on February 9th.  Do let me know if anyone has any queries about the role – I’ve also appended a few FAQs at the bottom in response to queries that I have received since posting the original advertisement.

Our exciting new role is linked to the evaluation of a 3-year EU-funded project called EUSPACE-AWE led by the University of Leiden which is "using the inspiration of space to interest children and teenagers in science and technology, broaden their minds and stimulate European and global citizenship”.  The successful applicant will be based in the Department of Science and Technology Studies at UCL (though there is some flexibility in actual location as remote working is potentially possible).  We will be developing a framework to strategically explore the impacts of a very wide variety of science outreach events (including MOOCs, Citizen Science, student contests, teachers’ workshops etc.), as well as potential approaches for determining longitudinal impacts.  So yes we anticipate it to be both stimulating and challenging, and intend for the findings to be relevant more widely outside the project also.

It’s a part-time role (2 days per week) lasting for 3 years, starting as soon as possible after March 1st. Full details are at http://bit.ly/14jOMfY and I’m very happy to answer any queries directly.  The deadline for applications is February 9th, with interviews being held on February 17th in London (though Skype may be possible for remote candidates).

• Remote working (e.g. working from home, outside London) is possible, with the following stipulations:
  • The post holder would be responsible for any additional travel costs to attend occasional meetings in London.
  • UCL HR have stipulated that anyone living outside the London area would NOT receive the London salary weighting, however for a suitable candidate I would be looking to maximise the appointment within the possible salary range, so overall the income should be similar.
  • An international location is feasible under appropriate circumstances (e.g. family commitments preventing a move to London) however the post holder must have a UK bank account and the salary would be paid in GBP.  Under certain circumstances cheque payments may be possible however again they would be made in GBP.  The post holder would need to negotiate with UK HMRC about whether they would be exempt from paying UK taxes.
• As the description suggests, it is essential that candidates can argue that they meet the ‘essential criteria’ for the role, so please do check through those details carefully.  For example completing an MSc without further research experience is unfortunately not considered ‘equivalent to’ a social research PhD background.  Of course if you have other social research / evaluation experience and can argue an appropriate level of skill in this area, despite not having a formal  PhD qualification (or even no MSc) then you definitely may be eligible – get in touch if you have any queries on this front.  We will expect you to be able to provide examples of specific reports or documents to demonstrate your social research/evaluation experience if you are shortlisted to interview stage.
• The EUSPACE-AWE project already contains a very wide range of space-related outreach activities.  Although obviously we are keen to make connections with other space awareness initiatives, we are unfortunately not currently in a position to seek additional exemplars to test within this framework.  So please do let me know of any related projects so we can link everything together across the field, but unfortunately we will not be able to contribute to evaluating them for free :)
