Good evening,

I hope you can assist, I am working in the Middle East and heading up our occupational health and safety department. This is new to our hospital and I would like to introduce the service to all employees, I am focussing on expectant and new mothers to start with as I feel this is a high proportion of our work force and can utilise this service to introduce the services in a productive way. I am currently looking for some good posters and material I can place in our 'mothers room' as I feel this is an ideal captive focus Point for new mothers who are breast feeding at work.

Your guidance and resources would be gratefully received.

Kind regards

Re: [OCC-HEALTH] Africa travel Hello Helen

This is likely to be much more complex than they anticipate as Africa is an enormous continent, even within a particular area there can be differences, particularly in relation to the imms and malaria prophylaxis required. Malaria prophylaxis could be an issue for some people as it certain ones can lead to psychiatric side effects.  Yellow Fever and live vaccines are required for certain areas of Africa and are an issue for people with immunity issues.

Where exactly are they going to? I am sure other subscribers can assist you with imms etc. I have been doing voluntary work in South Africa on an annual basis for nearly 15 years. Where I go is extremely rural – the nearest large-ish town, and thus hospital is 2 hours drive away, part of it involves driving on un-metaled roads – ie dirt tracks. That would be a different kettle of fish compared to working in a large City such as Nairobi, Johannesburgh or Cape Town.

I think there is at least one subscriber who works for an OHS which provides a service to missionaries so they may be better placed to advise. Looking forward to their response.

Anne

Hi all

We have a company who have decided to give long-term support to a charity to build schools in Sub-Saharan Africa. Volunteer employees can go for a week each to help with the school. The company want to make sure their employees are fit to go and in their wisdom and without consultation sent the volunteers the ‘Pre’ employment health questionnaire they use, thinking that would be good enough and we (OH) could ‘fit’ or ‘not fit’ them for the trip. I have told them the questionnaire is not suitable and I'm asking if any of you have a questionnaire that may be suitable to use and if so could you share it please.

They also told me the charity does not check for fitness to go as that's up to the company or each individual.

We first learnt about this when we started getting the completed health questionnaires through!

Many thanks for your help and being there to ask
Helen
