I’m very wary of selecting journal titles just by allocating the budget ‘fairly’. It may be that key titles in one discipline cost double what key titles in another discipline
cost. I would look at the usage, the ease of obtaining via ILL and the value to the Trust, together with the cost. Also, alternative ways of obtaining the journal.
In the past I’ve sent a list of titles to consultants, together with the cost of each subscription, and said that I need to cut £x from their journal budget. However, I found
that different consultants had different interests and they couldn’t agree on what to cut. That’s when I looked at ease of obtaining items via ILL.
In fact, in the end, some departments agreed to fund one or two journal subscriptions, or agreed to donate a copy to the library, so savings were made to the library budget.

Subject: Journal collections
Hi all
We are constantly reviewing our journal collection and in the past have conducted an annual journal survey to find out if existing subscriptions are still useful and to ask for suggestions for new titles. The results have not always been
helpful and some departments expect a wider range of titles than current budgets will run to. We have investigated subscribing to Clinical Key but this is not an option for us. We do subscribe to other packages but we are particularly interested in selection
processes for individual titles. We were wondering if any Trusts in a similar position had found any robust ways of ensuring that the most useful journals are purchased for each department whilst ensuring a fair allocation of a limited budget.
