italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear Colleagues,
On 21-22 May 2015 Ca’ Foscari University (Venice) will host the last of three annual research colloquia on the theme of 'Renaissance Conflict and Rivalries: Cultural Polemics in Europe,
c. 1300-c. 1650'. The final colloquium will be devoted to the topic of ‘Management and Resolution of Conflict and Rivalries in Renaissance Europe’. Several bursaries covering accommodation and/or travel within Italy and Europe are available,
particularly for PhD students and early career researchers (up to around 5 years out of the PhD) wishing to attend.
The colloquia spring from a Leverhulme International Network (based at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom) that seeks to explore the relationship between the cultural renewal that
many contemporaries saw taking place in art, literature, scholarship, and science and the simultaneous prevalence of opposition, confrontation, and rivalry, well captured by the German term Streitkultur. For further details on the Network

The Venice colloquium, on ‘Management and Resolution of Conflict and Rivalries in Renaissance Europe’, will explore a number of questions. These will include (but not be
confined to) the literary, philosophical, artistic, diplomatic and political means through which various tensions and conflicts of Renaissance Europe were addressed and resolved. Applicants for bursaries should, by noon GMT on Monday, 16
February 2015, send a statement (250-500 words) outlining why it is important for them to participate, as well as a two-page CV and approximate travel budget, to Ms Jayne
Brown ([log in to unmask]), secretary of Warwick's Centre for
the Study of the Renaissance.
