Michigan State University
invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Letters. The nation’s pioneer
land-grant university and a member
of the Association of American Universities, Michigan State University is a
research-intensive institution with 17 degree granting colleges. The College of
Arts and Letters is one of the University’s three core colleges. With
a student population of more than 50,000, including nearly 11,300 graduate and
professional students from all 50 states and from more than 130 countries the
University community is multi-ethnic and multinational. The campus is located
in East Lansing, a cosmopolitan university town of 50,000 adjacent to Lansing,
the state capital. Michigan State University is also the home of the Eli and
Edythe Broad Art Museum which opened in 2013. The College of Arts and Letters
is an important link in a vibrant local arts community.
The College of Arts and Letters houses eight
major academic departments: Art, Art History, and Design; English; Linguistics and
Germanic, Slavic, Asian and African Languages; Philosophy; Religious Studies; Romance
and Classical Studies; Theatre; and Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures. In
addition, the College is home to many interdisciplinary programs: African American and
African Studies; American Indian Studies; the Cognitive Science Program; Film
Studies; Global Studies in the Arts and Humanities; Jewish Studies; Museum
Studies; Second Language Studies; and Women’s and Gender Studies. The College
also includes; the Center for Applied
Inclusive Teaching and Learning in Arts and Humanities; the Center for Gender in Global Context; the Center for
Integrative Studies in Arts and Humanities; the Center for Language Education
and Research; the Center for Language Teaching Advancement; the Creativity Exploratory; the Digital Humanities Literary Cognition Lab; the English Language Center; Writing
in Digital Environments; the
Language Learning Center; and the Writing Center. This spectrum of disciplines, programs
and centers reflects the breadth of the academic interests of the college’s approximately 400
faculty and academic staff, 1800 undergraduate students, and 350 graduate
students. The Dean is the
chief academic officer of
the college and reports directly to the Provost.
MSU is seeking an individual with a high profile
of scholarly or artistic accomplishment and a commitment to promoting the arts
and humanities; demonstrable, democratic, and transparent administrative
leadership; an ability to represent the College to local, national, and
international constituencies; effective interpersonal and communication skills;
and the ability to move the College
forward by responding appropriately to institutional, professional and national
imperatives. The next dean will
be an inclusive leader with a fundamental commitment to diversity. An earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree, such as an
MFA in artistic or creative fields, is required. Candidates must meet standards for appointment at the rank
of professor (with tenure) in an academic department of the university.
