Dear Italianists,

I am currently studying a printed tax register from Naples dated 1692. It lists the names of all vendors, the products they are selling, and their location in the city. One of the vendors, Nicola Montagna, was granted the right to sell 'moscimao' near the gate of San Lorenzo. I am assuming that 'moscimao' might be a foodstuff (perhaps related to 'mostaccioli'?), as he was also given the right to sell bread at another location in the city. The word appears more than once in the register so it is not a typo. The word does not appear in any Neapolitan or Italian dictionary. If anyone has any ideas about what 'moscimao' might be, please get in touch with me directly.
