There have been earlier posts on HER Forum about the Archi website (some going back to the early 2000s!).  It’s been around for a long time….

I think the claim that it’s used by ‘County Archaeological Services’ may originate from people logging on to have a look at what records it has for their area.

Regards,

Julia

Hi All

Thanks for your replies.

The figures of sites are quoted in the report (10km of the site) but no further information and the figures are much lower than the HER can produce.

In this Heritage Statement, I think it was a case of not knowing the correct procedure rather than purposefully ignoring the HER.

I was concerned (and perhaps more so with the quote about ‘County Archaeology departments’ contributing to the data) that some of the data already on the web could be re-used on this website without the HER’s knowledge.

Similarly to Helen this has popped up on my radar a couple of times (most recently last year, as it advertises through Facebook).

I came to a similar conclusion, about who it was aimed at. I also thought that it was unlikely to have much info of use to our HER, and wasn’t prepared to pay to find out.

But as you have someone who has (I assume) given you the information from it, I would be interested to see if ARCHI does have anything you didn’t know about through the NMR/HER/PAS etc

Best wishes

Hi,

I have come across this a few times, not by people using it for heritage statements mind you!  It seems to be where metal detectorists go to find their info.  I have no idea where they get their data from, though.  It seems rather odd.

Hi All

We have recently received a heritage statement which instead of including HER information, it included information from a website called: Archaeology UK http://www.digital-documents.co.uk/archi/about_us.htm.

I have never heard of this but there is a subscription to pay for access to the data and it seems to be a little more than information from personal communications and local journals. Have any of you had any experience of this website and where the information comes from?

We are obviously enforcing the consultation of the HER in line with the NPPF but it did seem a little worrying that we seem to have a  type of ‘competitor’ in loose terms and obviously this website is not going to be as up to date as the HER and is not acceptable as a substitute for the HER.

Thoughts?
