We do charge VAT, but that is largely due to the … quirky … way our finance team processes HER trawls. All Commercial HER searches are invoiced as “Archaeological
Pre-Application Enquiries” and are therefore liable for VAT in the same way as any other pre-app.
Some consistency on this would be nice, but our charging regime is always going to be inconsistent!

Our VAT officer informed us we should be VAT exempt a few years ago.
Perhaps all the Local Authority VAT officers should get together and form some consensus, I would say it is out of our hands and in theirs.
