Dear colleagues,

The Department of Comparative Literature in the School of European Culture and Languages at the University of Kent is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Comparative Literature.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher, able to design, teach, and convene existing undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Comparative and World Literature, and to develop new modules in their area of expertise. The candidate will also contribute to the Department’s increasing ambition and international standing in terms of high-quality research.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD or equivalent in Comparative Literature or a relevant discipline, with expertise in at least two linguistically distinct literary traditions, an outstanding research profile commensurate with their career stage, as well as the ability to teach on a range of modules in the Department’s Comparative and World Literature programmes.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates whose expertise includes African, Arabic, Asian, or Slavonic literature.

The Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Kent

Comparative Literature at Kent prides itself on the excellence of its research and its research-led teaching. The Department has consistently achieved high ratings in the National Student Survey (being ranked 1st in the UK for overall student satisfaction in 2014), and its staff made substantial contributions to the University’s Modern Languages and Linguistics submission to the Research Assessment Framework (REF) 2014, achieving an outstanding result - joint 3rd (with a GPA of 3.24). With the two higher ranked submissions in that subject area specialising only in linguistics, this has confirmed Kent as being the highest ranked University in REF2014 for the modern languages subject areas in the UK. With 56 submissions made in this subject area, 85% of the work in Modern Languages and Linguistics at Kent was graded world-leading or internationally excellent and outstanding grades were achieved for public impact work and the quality of the research environment.
