About:
Long-term care for people with chronic illnesses and disabilities presents an urgent global challenge. The World Health Organisation estimates that in many developing countries the need will increase by as much as 400% in the coming decades (WHO 2002). Yet, the contribution that carers make to their families and communities in which they live goes largely unrecognised.
Carers often experience ill health and many suffer from poverty and even discrimination. A lack of support services impacts directly on carers’ health and wellbeing, and there is often a lack of structured emotional supports. Most carers are women and issues of gender discrimination can increase the problems they face.
These issues are prevalent in developing countries, where there is little or no state support or provision for families affected by disability, mental illness, HIV/AIDS, chronic illness or old age. The wider economic needs of the carer and family are not a focus, and many of these families live in extreme poverty.
Anil Patil, Founder of Carers Worldwide, has 17 years experience in the international development sector, and has extensive experience in delivering positive change for the public benefit in the fields of community mental health, disability and farmed animal welfare as well as community based interventions in developing countries.
