SPAbiennial conference: Boston, April 9-12, 2015 http://www.aaanet.org/sections/spa/?page_id=1338 Session: “Transitioning out of infancy: weaning, attachmentand social learning"
The change of status from “infant” to “child” constitutes a significanttransition in a child's life. In spite of a great deal of cross-culturalvariation in the “script” for this transition, scholars have rarely examined orcompared the overall process. There are focused studies of age of weaning andlater personality, for example. Another recent research area is the decreasingrole of the birth mother corresponding to an increased role foralloparents—siblings and grandmothers, in particular. These studies havechallenged several tenets of attachment theory.  Other compelling fociinclude: the child’s increased independence and social participation; weaningfrom the breast, and from the back (being carried everywhere) and; reducedtolerance for clumsy, intrusive behavior.  But efforts to obtainwide-angle views of the child during this transition and generalize from theseanalyses are quite rare. A notable exception is Weisner and Gallimore’s classicsurvey, where they highlight the phenomenon of “toddler rejection” (1977: 176). Papers in thispanel will take the first step towards this broader analysis by identifyingsome of the cultural practices that support the transition of children out ofinfancy in a given cultural context. We invite contributions from students and scholars, hoping for fertilecomparisons and vivid discussions.
