Dear members,

Editors of the Town Planning Review journal have selected one of the most influential articles from this year’s volume to be made freely available open access for a limited time.

Free Urban Planning Article: A future for cities? Building new methodologies and systems for urban foresight

Professor Mark Tewdwr-Jones and Emeritus Professor John Goddard, who co-lead the Newcastle City Futures project, employ a range of new methods to shape conversations between city leaders and communities to create a comprehensive view of the medium to long-term trends likely to impact upon urban development.

Among the issues under discussion in this article on the future of the city are:

·         identification of new and emerging business opportunities

·         how to deal with the health needs of an elderly population

·         how to manage investment in public transport (including switching to electric vehicles and more cycling)

·         how to deliver education opportunities attuned to the future

·         how to address threats from extreme weather events

Thank you
