Last of the 25 drug ‘bites’ explores research on how treatment can protect the community from the consequences of drug use – treatment in itself, and treatment offered or imposed by law enforcement authorities. In these contexts, the task is meld enforcement pressure and surveillance focused on crime with the patient-centred, caring ethos of treatment. Does coercion and/or collaboration with law enforcement authorities undermine or amplify treatment’s crime-reducing impact, and should treatment systems maximise coercion, or maximise voluntary engagement?
