... just to add one thing to Marko's comment.  The default segmentation is a modified version of the "new segment" of SPM8.  There were some issues with spm8's new segment (which a few people noticed) that have now been fixed.  For details of the changes, see the appendix of:

Malone, Ian B., Kelvin K. Leung, Shona Clegg, Josephine Barnes, Jennifer L. Whitwell, John Ashburner, Nick C. Fox, and Gerard R. Ridgway. "Accurate automatic estimation of total intracranial volume: A nuisance variable with less nuisance." NeuroImage (2014).

For anyone segmenting images, I would suggest they use spm12, rather than older versions of spm.

Hello Sheng,

spm_segment is the old, old way to segment datasets. The standard approach in spm8 is unified segmentation, and I sent a mail to the list on April 13 (Friday, no less :), 2012 (https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A2=SPM;ce9103f4.1204) regarding scripting that approach. The "new segment" toolbox in spm8 which now is standard segment in spm12 is different again; I have not yet gotten around to scripting that.

Cheers,
Marko

Dear SPM experts:

I have some troubles in segment algorithm in SPM8. As far as I know, the
segment algorithm changed a lot compared to the old one in SPM 5 or
earlier version. I even cannot find the exact .m-file corresponding
segment button in SPM8 since it was used named as spm_segment.m in
earlier versions. I wonder which m-file(s) is the direct function
related to Segment button in SPM8 or SPM12 so that I can check the new
algorithm further.

Thanks a lot!

Sheng
