spm_segment is the old, old way to segment datasets. The standard approach in spm8 is unified segmentation, and I sent a mail to the list on April 13 (Friday, no less :), 2012 (https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A2=SPM;ce9103f4.1204) regarding scripting that approach. The "new segment" toolbox in spm8 which now is standard segment in spm12 is different again; I have not yet gotten around to scripting that.
