Dear Hanif and Suman,
 
Thank you for your  email which I have recd today (the 12th of Dec)​ .  I am in Mumbai and am receiving all the emails on my computer.
 
I am Prof (Dr) Zenobia Nadirshaw  -a Consultant Clinical Psychologist  by background and have now retired from  full time NHS work after 39 years.  I am still actively involved with the Br Psychological Society and the Div of Clinical Psychology (DCP)   and I  chair a few Committees .  I was Chair of the` Race ` and Culture Faculty until the DCP Executive Committee closed it  down ,.I am still unsure exactly why and who took  this decision . It was  felt that we had not achieved much--although I had given enough evidence to show them that was not the case..
 
It is v good and reassuring  to know that you  are all concerned as us re the current situation  of the closure . The DCP Executive has appointed Mr Stephen Weatherthead  who is one of the DCP Executive Committee  members to take the lead for the DCP Equality and Diversity strategy. He is committed to "creating a positive future" and in my opinion he is a reliable person to initiate these changes. My only worry  is that they want  to subsume the `race` and culture agenda under the Equality and Diversity  strategy and one will lose the focus on the `race` and culture emphasis which is highly relevant in the  psychology  service provision  area as well as psychology teaching area.  I would be grateful  if you  continue  to place emphasis on the `race` and culture perspective within the overall Equality and Diversity agenda.
 
I wd be grateful if you remain in contact with me as I have a good understanding of all the issues and related matters..

Perhaps understandably so as it would expose them within the BPS and face those institutional barriers to progress and further discrimination.

The four if us (the ISL group- ‘Inquiry into schizophrenia label’ ) who wrote to Anne Cooke the editor of the report are still communicating with Anne Cooke. But all this is getting very time and effort-consuming. We are trying not get involved in what seem to be wider issues at DCP where  there seem to be power games being played by the DCP Exec maybe with BME people being ‘used’. Great Stuff Suman and thanks for pressing on with this.

 

There is a strong sense across the UK  health field at this time that we should not be talking about race (and certainly not about discrimination) but this is easily the most naked draconian instance I'm familiar with of race being deliberately excised from professional discussion. One has to be very worried about the complacency on display here.

Before launching a headlong attack in the BPS it would be useful to find out exactly what went wrong with the attempt to form this group. It sounds very promising and you would think it could count on plenty of interest within the organisation. Time for some subtle detective work!

I believe there was an attempt to form a new group within DCP for BME (racialized) groups - in fact some of the younger BME people told me about it - I guess it was prevented / suppressed. I certainly will do my bit locally in exposing DCP  as a racist organisation.

Anne Cooke the editor of the report fully accepted our criticism and expressed her ‘heartfelt’ apology saying she was ‘ashamed’ of having let this report through. There was then talk of even re-writing the report and also of issuing an official apology. But now having ‘consulted’  with others she is backtracking, and has failed to come up with the apology she promised!  In the course of discussions we have learned that the Division of Clinical Psychology (DCP) that issued the report had quite recently disbanded its Race and Culture Faculty without consulting its members and there had been a great row within DCP but they held to what  seemed to be essentially an institutionally racist action. None of the people who had been members of the (recently disbanded) Race and Culture Faculty had been consulted for the report - in fact several of the more prominent members did not even know that the report was being published and not invited to the launch. 

 

All this may speak about what  Clinical Psychology is like as a professional body.

Six days ago, the BPS division of Clinical Psychology launched a report called  ‘Understanding Psychosis and Schizophrenia’. apparently drawn up by ‘eminent clinical psychologists drawn from eight universities and six NHS trusts, together with service users’.  Believe it or not, BME groups and people seem to have been totally excluded and of course issues (of ‘race’ and cultural diversity) that affect BME groups  ignored!
