The Institute of Humanities and Social Science Research (IHSSR) at Manchester Metropolitan University invites high-quality applications for PhD studentships in the following areas:

The IHSSR brings together over 170 academic staff from seven distinct, yet interconnected subject areas: English/Film/Creative Writing, History, Politics, Philosophy, Sociology, Languages and Information & Communication. It is home to the Centre of Research in Library and Information Management, the Manchester Centre for Regional History, the Gothic Studies Centre, the Centre for the Study of Football and its Communities, the Centre for Film, Languages and Media Pedagogy, the Manchester Centre for Youth Studies, and the Manchester Writing School.  We have a long history of successful research supervision in all areas of the Humanities and we welcome collaborative research proposals as well as traditional PhD projects. 


Research candidates will be provided with expert supervision, including cross-institutional supervision and mentoring where appropriate, both subject-specific and generic training, and professional support to prepare for and develop a career.


These highly competitive and prestigious AHRC-funded studentships are managed by the North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership. The scheme offers fully funded, three-year studentships with the possibility of up to an additional six months for placement or professional experience. The awards are made competitively across the seven consortium members and 19 subject pathways. Last year Manchester Metropolitan University received three awards.

Funding for these studentships is conditional on attaining a place in the MMU Graduate School (application deadline 23 January 2015, followed by an interview) and a further successful application to the AHRC North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership (deadline 13 February 2015).
