***PhD Studentships in Italian Studies at the University of Leeds for 2015-16***

Italian at the University of Leeds is pleased to invite applications for the following PhD studentships:

1) White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities (WRoCAH) AHRC Studentships:
- Deadline for applications: 2 February 2015
- For a proposal to be eligible, it must be interdisciplinary and aligned to one of the four AHRC themes: 1) Care for the Future: Thinking Forward through the Past; 2) Digital Transformations in the Arts and Humanities; 3) Science in Culture; 4) Translating Cultures.
- EU students should only apply for WRoCAH funding if they are able to manage on a fees only award. Success in this competition may rule you out of selection for other UoL funding which offers EU students fees and maintenance.

2) University of Leeds 110 Anniversary Research Scholarships:
- Deadline for applications: 18 February 2015
- Theme: Legacies of Conflict / Translating Cultures. The School of Languages, Cultures and Societies is offering up to 5 scholarships for a research project that reflect the diversity and range of the research undertaken in the School, from language and linguistics to cultural, social, political and historical themes. ‘Legacies of Conflict’ reflects our concern with exploring the cultural, political and social effects of current and past conflicts. ‘Translating cultures’ is to be understood as relating to all aspects of translation between different languages, including machine translation and corpus linguistics as well as the use of language and cultural production such as literature, theatre and film to convey and construct meaning across and within different national contexts and at different times.

We encourage applications for PhD study in areas related to Italian studies, culture, language, literature and cinema among other subjects. Proposals should explain the link with the studentiship's themes: 1) Care for the Future: Thinking Forward through the Past; 2) Digital Transformations in the Arts and Humanities; 3) Science in Culture; 4) Translating Cultures for the AHRC and Legacies of Conflict / Translating Cultures for the University of Leeds Anniversary Research Scholarship.

Italian at Leeds is one the most innovative subject areas on campus and one of the top rated Italian departments in the country. Our students will conduct independent research in a world-leading academic environment. Italian at Leeds has been ranked second in the latest national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008), and has received two major grants (Italian Voices: Oral Culture, Manuscript and Print in Early Modern Italy, 1450-1700, and Dante and Late Medieval Florence: Theology in Poetry, Practice and Society). Thanks to our programme LivItaly, Italian at Leeds attracts important figures in contemporary Italian culture. Our students will have the opportunity of meeting Italian writers, singers, journalists and professionals. Leeds also hosts the prestigious Leeds Centre for Dante Studies, which organises a series of public lectures and runs initiatives to support students working on Dante, including a national study day on Dante and the innovative Leeds Dante podcasts. We have a strong supervisory record on a wide variety of topics across a range of fields, from the from the Duecento to the contemporary. Our particular strengths lie in:
