italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies

Call for papers

Papers are invited for the panel "Fin-de-siècle Italy: the crisis of the century" to be held at the Annual Conference of the Canadian Society for Italian Studies (Sant'Anna Institute - Sorrento, 19-21 June 2015).

FIN-DE-SIÈCLE ITALY: THE CRISIS OF THE CENTURY

In 1892, in his book "Degeneration", Max Nordau claims that his epoch is facing an inevitable and ruinous decay, but there is "hope that in the chaos of thought, art may yield revelations of the order that is to follow on this tangled web". This panel seeks to investigate this sense of anxiety coupled with hope in the Italian fin-de-siècle culture. The description given by the controversial critic testifies an atmosphere of bewilderment concerning all cultural domains, from aesthetics, literary and artistic criticism to the newly emerging human sciences (psychology, sociology, anthropology, and social Darwinism), stemming from the decline of philosophical systems like Positivism and from the search for a new spirituality. While this process is global to Europe, we are interested in exploring and highlighting its peculiarities in the Italian context.

Papers (15-20 minutes) may be presented in English, Italian, or French. Please send a 250-300- word abstract and a bio-bibliographical note to Sara Boezio at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> by January 15, 2015. Notifications of acceptance will be sent shortly after the deadline.
