Fine Energy Limited is a developer of wind energy sites, based in Birmingham and Edinburgh and operating throughout the UK. The company has site development contracts with leading medium-scale turbine manufacturers and investors in land rental sites.
A geographical information system (GIS) Technician is required, based in central Birmingham, to maintain and develop our GIS, capturing public domain and proprietary information which we use to select and develop the UK’s best sites for medium-scale wind turbines.
The datasets include:
• basic topographical and Ordnance Survey base layer data
• mean wind speed at various heights
• environmentally designated areas e.g. Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Sites of Special Scientific Interest, Special Areas of Protection
• relevant telecommunications, NATS and MOD assets
The role will primarily involve producing technical products such as maps for Project Managers to assist in suitable siting of turbines and compiling Screening and Planning applications.
Skills and Experience Required:
• Graduate or Post Graduate in GIS or related domain
• Thorough fluency with ESRI ArcView 10, with proficiency to capture, digitize and update features into GIS formats
• Excellent cartographic and analysis skills to assess site suitability.
• Familiarity with mapping techniques and different types of spatial datasets across UK
• Basic Photoshop skills
• Ability to store, manipulate and create spatial datasets
• Basic hardware and software technical knowledge
Desirable:
• Production of Photomontages and Wireframes
• Visualization and modelling skills
• Experience using Wind Farmer, Google Sketchup and/or AutoCAD
• Familiarity with the MS office package and Windows/Mac Operating Systems
• Knowledge of programming languages
• Familiarity with Open Source GIS software, such as QGIS
• Experience in Wind Industry
• Familiarity with Javascript, HTML and/or PHP
• Experience working with Openlayers, Geoserver and PostGIS
Salary range: £18,000 - £22,000 pa dependent on skills and experience.
