Dear All,

We regret to inform you that Russ Evans died on 1 December 2014 following a battle with cancer.

Following a first degree in mathematics and research into Earth tides and crustal deformation at Cambridge, he spent three years at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, DC, working on surface-wave studies of oceanic regions. Moving to the British Geological Survey in 1978, he undertook micro-earthquake studies in various parts of the world to establish the significance of seismic anisotropy. Subsequently, his work moved towards applying geophysical techniques to geological problems. He served for many years as managing editor of Geophysical Journal International. Russ had partially retired but was still a key member of the staff at BGS Edinburgh. From 2010 he led the BGS contribution to the development of the European Plate Observation System Research Infrastructure (EPOS) and was a member of the EPOS Programme Development Board.

Russ will be sadly missed by his colleagues in BGS and around the world.

On behalf of BGS,

Brian Baptie
