Geographies of Humanitarian Protection: Engagements with Violence and Place

This section focuses on geographies of humanitarian protection and seeks to explore a diversity of spatial projects designed to protect and shelter people from violence. Places that might be examined include but are not limited to hospital and security zones for noncombatants affected by armed conflict; camps and settlements for refugees and displaced persons; sanctuary cities for asylum seekers and irregular migrants; community organized peace zones; and shelters, prisons, and detention centers deemed to protect individuals at risk of attack or abuse. We welcome analyses of cases rich in empirical and historical detail as well as interrogations of discourses of protection from violence, the securitization of migration, and the politics of establishing protective sites. Our goal is to critically engage with the topic of violence in the broadest possible sense and to problematize those places designed to prevent, prohibit, or address violence. We hope that as a result of these engagements, we will be better equipped to identify commonalities and divergences among humanitarian geographies, and the particular structuring role played by violence in their production.

Paper, panel, and roundtable proposals are welcome. Please send expressions of interest to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. 200 word abstracts are due by January 15, 2015 via the online submission system: www.conftool.pro/paneuropean2015/<http://www.conftool.pro/paneuropean2015/>
