Peter, isn't it the case that you never thought of John as being an avant-gardist because whenever you talk of the avant-garde you limit them to one particular section with which you have had profound disagreements? The avant-garde (or whatever you want to call 'em) is a very wide spectrum which contains many of the genial and even the jovial.
